John Taylor recently joined Carbon Architecture, part of Bellrock Group, as Head of Analytics and Integration. Find out how his passion to make buildings more energy efficient is being achieved with the help of InMetriks software.
With a career committed to improving energy efficiency in existing buildings, John is ideally placed to head up the InMetriks team at Carbon Architecture. We sat down with John to talk more about his career, his dedication to energy efficiency and how InMetriks can bring real value to our clients.
After initially working in building services design, John shifted focus to improving energy consumption in current buildings, optimising existing systems rather than designing new ones. This combined background helped John achieve Chartered Engineer status with CIBSE, recognising his understanding of how heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems work and how they should operate effectively while also being energy efficient.
John has held leading roles in consultancy firms. As Director of Delivery at Carbon Credentials, he was responsible for all strategic, energy performance and data reporting services. Most recently, he worked as Chief Operating Officer for two Sustainability Consultancy startups, applying his business experience to implement effective systems and processes.
But it was energy performance in buildings that John wanted to dive back into. After reconnecting with former colleague and Managing Director Will Todd, John made the move to Carbon Architecture and works with our proprietary software, InMetriks.
Extracting insightful data
John’s enthusiasm for energy efficiency, alongside his experience and background, means that he brings huge benefits to Carbon Architecture and our clients. John says:
“Energy efficiency in buildings is really where I feel I can make the most impact; using the technical knowledge I have to help customers understand the energy performance of their buildings, and demonstrating ways we can make them better.”
Using that knowledge, he is leading the team of consultants at Carbon Architecture who use InMetriks to make sense of a building’s energy performance.
“Ultimately, InMetriks is a suite of tools that help identify energy waste in a building,” explains John. “What we’re able to do is apply those tools to connect and analyse data to understand what’s happening in the building and recognise change. The software points towards where the waste might be so you can investigate. The data allows you to understand what’s happening, ask the right questions and answer them.
“What you’re looking for is, firstly, obvious ongoing, repeated waste. You also want to track consumption and when something’s negatively changed, use the tool to diagnose why and point you in the right direction to take the necessary actions. I think that’s the core of InMetriks as a suite of tools – guiding you quickly to delivering savings.
“Critically, data is useless without insight or understanding. You will always need support from our expert energy consultants to make sure you look at the right data, think about what is most important and then guide you through the change to action.
“InMetriks offers insights that allow our consultants to analyse and prioritise what needs to be done to make energy savings for our customers, drive through implementation and then monitor and review it.”
The capabilities of InMetriks can also support reporting for schemes such as the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and the Streamline Energy and Carbon Reporting Scheme (SECR).
Bringing benefits
“InMetriks is a tool that allows Carbon Architecture to help deliver savings to our clients. Our tagline is ‘straight talking, solutions focused’, which is just what the InMetriks tool and our consultants are striving to provide for our customers,” says John.
